Erasmus Mundus scholarships for students

Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available for 'third country nationals' (defined below) selected by the Mundus MAPP Consortium. The scholarships are provided by the European Commission and total 21,000 Euros per academic year, i.e. 42,000 Euros for the two years of the program, less the Mundus MAPP tuition fees. The participating universities select candidates in a competitive process from among eligible Mundus MAPP applicants, and forward the names to the European Commission for approval under the Erasmus Mundus Programme. Please note that candidates are NOT required to apply directly to the Commission for funding (indeed this is not possible).

Candidates who are awarded an Erasmus Mundus scholarship are required to complete the entire 2-year long Mundus MAPP program, and will receive their double degrees only upon completion of the full program.

Eligibility for Erasmus Mundus Scholarships

There are two types of scholarship offered by the European Commission:

I) Erasmus Mundus scholarship - general category (18 scholarships):

In this category Mundus MAPP applicants from 'third countries' may request to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship. The European Commission defines "third-country national" as follows:

Nationals coming from all countries other than the 27 EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), Turkey,), who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, living etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

Nationals of the following countries are consequently not eligible to apply for the general category:

- the 27 EU member states (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, the UK, Sweden, Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania)

- the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)

- the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and Turkey).

Recipients of the Erasmus Mundus scholarships must have already obtained a first higher education degree; and have been accepted to register or is registered in an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course (in this case Mundus MAPP).

II) Erasmus Mundus scholarship - Western Balkans Window (to be confirmed for 2009-2011):

Applicants from the following countries will be considered for this type of scholarship: Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia.

Applications from eligible applicants from Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia will be automatically considered for both the general category and the Western Balkans Window of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship.

Applying

Candidates who wish to be considered for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship will need to indicate this in the on-line application form. No separate funding application will be necessary.

Please note that as of the 2008-2009 academic year the number of applications by third country students must be limited to three Erasmus Mundus Masters Courses maximum. In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three EM Courses he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
